Brief
The Geoscan 801 is a powerful drone with video and thermal cameras for various types of shooting.​​​​​​​
The quadcopter kit comes with a remote, charger, four batteries, and a transport case.
Geoscan team needed to create a controller for the 801 video drone that could be compatible with any other Geoscan drone.​​​​​​​​​​​​​
Geoscan team did internal engineering and overall ergonomic research, but after some time of trying to get the design right without success, they reached us. Above you can see the kick-off form of the remote controller.
Process Overview
Research the Geoscan 801 drone to extract its key design elements and translate them into the remote controller.
Develop multiple design concepts differing in overall feeling and details.
Go through several iterations of concept refinement. Define concept graphics and icons. Arrive to a defined concept, everyone is satisfied with.
Develop a 3D CAD model based on the defined concept design illustration. Go through a lengthy iterative process of its refinement and detailing.
Print design mockups and check their ergonomics and aesthetics. Identify areas for improvement and implement them into the model. Repeat the process until satisfied with the result.
Carefully refine the position and design of the buttons, joysticks and wheels, to assure comfortable control and no accidental commands.
Visit an appliance store, research grip designs and texture patterns. Textured grips add to a premium feeling and are tactilely pleasant.
Propose several grip pattern designs. The "Stripes" texture gives to a remote controller come kind of subconscious attraction.
Another texture is based on hexagons, because Geoscan already uses this kind of pattern on some other products.
Geoscan prints the entire remote controller and tests it with a mass and center of gravity like the real one. 
After it's analysis we move on to refine the design.
Make adjustments to address technological issues discovered during prototyping. 
Correct and defne remaining details, among which are the wheels, buttons, icons and label, textures,draft angles, etc. ​​​​​​​
Involve an experienced graphic designer to define graphics and icons. 
After several lineup iterations with a client we finish graphics development.
Propose several CMF options, defining colors and textures of the remote controller. Used colours are the ones from the drone 801, enforcing the family feeling.
Project Result
Remote controller of the Geoscan 801 drone has various advantages that make it user-friendly and efficient for multiple tasks, that require visual monitoring. ​​​​​​​
Intuitive for beginners, the layout is straightforward for easy navigation of functions and settings. The ergonomic arrangement of buttons and switches ensures quick access without strain, and its lightweight design prevents fatigue during prolonged use.
It is portable with foldable antennas and removable sticks stored in a dedicated compartment.
Featuring connectors on the back surface, equipped with rubber covers and engraving for protection against water and dirt.
The Geoscan 801 drone's remote controller serves as an ideal tool, offering users a convenient and efficient means to gather real-time data.
Industrialisation​​​​​​​
We carry out design supervision during the engineering development and production of the remote controller due to changes in technical requirements and new technological features.
Geoscan produces samples and tests them in-filed with future customers - emergency teams, fire fighters, etc.
Publications

Test the pre-production sample in various situations while using the drone for firefighting, rescue, monitoring of flooding, oil spills or accidents.
Experts found the Geoscan 801 drone to be versatile and durable, with a user-friendly remote controller and long flight time, making it a convenient and efficient tool for construction monitoring.

When we started working with Rodion Usaev, we already had an engineering prototype of our remote controller, and the layout and ergonomics were partially worked out. But at the same time, we could not figure out how to make our remote controller beautiful, look stylish and organical with the conditions of use. When we received the first presentation with 3 design options, we realized that this was the fresh flow of ideas that we needed. As a result of working together, despite the tight deadline, we were able to achieve a cool design that was both unique and recognizable, and additional work on ergonomics significantly improved usability.
